Big Tech continues to play the censorship game on social media, according to Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA).
The congressman made this remark during a Nov. 30 appearance on “The Evening Edit” on Fox Business. “Social media, and for that matter Big Media, … is still playing the censorship game as we speak,” he told program host David Asman. Issa’s answer came as a response to the host’s question whether it is “wonderful” for the free market to come to rescue Americans from government censorship.
“Governments are getting involved even more so because beyond the censorship you are seeing, in some cases, [involve] people’s actual bank accounts being frozen up [based on] the type of business you do,” continued Issa, a senior member of the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government (House WFG Subcommittee).
“We have a lot of liberty problems we have to restore. That’s one of the things that Republicans are working on. And, in fact, thank goodness, we can tweet out what we believe with a high likelihood that an audience will be free to hear it.” (Related: Rep. Meanwhile, Asman believes X platform owner Elon Musk does not care about censorship. However, advertisers are pulling out of X because of the smears from the nonprofit Media Matters. The Fox Business host cited The Walt Disney Company as one example of this, noting how its CEO Bob Iger has pulled advertising on X based on false premises.
Asman also touched on the second motion to impeach Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, asking his guest if he was going to vote for it. Issa responded that if this is the first step, he will participate in it.
But the California congressman expressed belief that his colleague, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), has pulled the measure. Despite this, he pointed out that the Republican-controlled House of Representatives must send a message to President Joe Biden that his impeachment is coming.
On the same day as Issa’s interview, the House Judiciary Committee (HJC) led by its chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) subpoenaed two former White House officials. The subpoenas went to former White House Senior Advisor for the COVID Response Team Andrew Slavitt and former White House Director of Digital Strategy Robert Flaherty. The HJC demanded that Slavitt and Flaherty disclose information on any role they played in censoring the American people’s opinions on social media.
“The [HJC] is conducting oversight of how and to what extent the Executive Branch has coerced and colluded with companies and other intermediaries to censor speech,” Jordan wrote to the two. “[We have] obtained documents that demonstrate the central role you played in communicating the Biden White House’s censorship efforts to social media companies, including the White House’s demands to censor true information, memes, satire and other constitutionally protected forms of expression.”
“To develop effective legislation, such as the possible enactment of new statutory limits on the executive branch’s ability to work with social media platforms and other companies to restrict the circulation of content and deplatform users, the [HJC] must first understand the nature of this collusion and coercion.”
The House WFG Subcommittee also continued its investigation on the federal government’s involvement in social media censorship on Nov. 30. Several witnesses testified during the hearing, including Matt Taibbi and Michael Shellenberger – two of the journalists responsible for the release of the so-called “Twitter Files.”
